The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will hold another nighttime graduation ceremony next year, and Mia Hamm will be the commencement speaker.
UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts announced plans for the May 2025 graduation events Thursday during a Board of Trustees meeting.

Hamm, an Olympic medalist and UNC alum who won four national championships while playing for Carolina, will address graduates on May 10 at Kenan Stadium. The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.
During her time at Carolina, Hamm set the NCAA women’s soccer scoring record with 278 points and led the Tar Heels to NCAA championships in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1993.
“I want the Class of 2025 to know that Carolina has prepared them to define their own legacy in this world,” Hamm said. “It’s a place where I was consistently challenged, loved and developed —not only into the player — but into the person I am today.”
UNC also held an evening graduation ceremony in May, which included fireworks.
More details will be released closer to the event in 2025.
