In this heat, being in the air conditioning is the only relief.
Yet some students attending summer programs at North Carolina Central University say they don't have even that. They tell WRAL that the AC is not working properly in classrooms, and even in dorm rooms.

"As soon as we got here for camp, we got these little like neck fans and we use them all the time," said Chloe Hightower, a high schooler at Central for a summer camp. "In the lab we had fans going, but it was still so hot. This weather is crazy."
Dennis Coble, whose granddaughter is attending a summer program at NCCU, says her dorm room is without AC, and has been without it since she moved in on Sunday.
"There's no air conditioning in their room," he said. "I reached out to the facilities, and I guess the management that is supposed to be in there, he never called me back...It's miserable. Hot. They've been complaining. Nobody's helping them."
WRAL sent a number of questions to NCCU to ask about the scope of the issue, how long there had been problems with the AC, what the University was doing to address those problems, and if it had enough funding to make necessary repairs. A spokesperson sent a statement that did not directly answer all of those questions.
It reads:
"Due to the extreme weather event this week, several HVAC repairs were required. All systems have seen [sic] been restored, and all campus buildings are currently cool."
After receiving that statement, WRAL asked students if the issues in their buildings were fixed, and was told the issues persisted.
"It was kinda bad today," Hightower said.
"It was pretty bad," said another student. "It's been getting worse. We've been here two weeks. It's been getting worse, slowly."
WRAL has reported in the past on concerns about housing conditions at NCCU, including a protest in April that resulted in the arrests of five individuals.
