Raleigh Water customers will see increase in utility bills effective July 1

Raleigh Water customers will see an increase in their utility bills beginning July 1.

Water and consumptive charges will rise by 4%, or an average monthly increase of $1.91, according to Raleigh Water, impacting "nearly all" single-family homes in Raleigh, Garner, Knightdale, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell and Zebulon.

According to Raleigh Water, the price adjustment is needed to maintain reliable water and sewer services and replace aging infrastructure.

Raleigh Water manages 5,170 miles of pipe, which is enough to stretch from Raleigh to Los Angeles and back, the city said. The infrastructure in need of repair includes critical pipes installed after World War II that, if not replaced, could lead to water main breaks and environmental consequences, according to the city. 

Raleigh Water released the following statement:

"Despite rising costs across the utility industry, Raleigh Water ratepayers have experienced some of the lowest and consistent increases in the state. By investing steadily each year, we can proactively address infrastructure needs, minimize sudden, steep rate hikes, and deliver reliable service while maximizing the value of every dollar spent."

Aside from using less water, people can keep their water bills low by using newer, efficient appliances and being aware of water leaks, according to the city.
