Residents return, roads open after days of wildfire near Shalotte

Firefighters on Saturday decreased the size of a wildfire burning in Brunswick County, allowing residents to return and roads to reopen.

The fire is down to 300 acres from 400 acres.

Progress is attributed to the collaborative efforts of the North Carolina Forest Service, all 19 Brunswick County fire departments, as well as crews from New Hanover County, Horry County in South Carolina, and the city of Wilmington.

One firefighter needed treatment on Saturday, but no one else was injured or has died.

The fire damaged one commercial storage building, a residential storage building, and several commercial work trucks and heavy equipment.

By Sunday morning, local roads had reopened, and evacuation orders had been lifted, allowing residents to return to their homes.
