NC State basketball champion Phil Spence, who coached in the Triangle, dies at 72

Phil Spence, a member of NC State's 1974 championship basketball team, passed away on Monday at the age of 72.

Spence, who was born and raised in Raleigh, showcased his talent in basketball at Broughton High School before coaching at Cary High School and East Wake High School.

His coaching journey continued at North Carolina Central University, where he led the team for four seasons in the early 2000s.  

NC State Men's Basketball posted on X: "We are saddened by the passing of former Wolfpack basketball player Phil Spence. Our thoughts and prayers are with Phil’s family, friends and all who knew and loved him."

Years ago, Spence survived a stroke. He used his experience to raise awareness about stroke prevention.

"I think everything happens for a reason," Spence said at the time.
