Langford's original sex crime was committed in Florida. In 1999, he was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior on a child under the age of 16. He was required to register upon moving to North Carolina and is forbidden from being on school property.

The school provided WRAL News with the following statement on Langford:

"When this individual arrived at campus as a new construction subcontractor, we used our standard visitor check-in procedure, scanning his ID with our visitor registration system. It flagged him as someone who should not be on the campus. We required him to leave the campus immediately and reported the incident to police, who investigated."

The school said the incident occurred while students were away on fall break.
