In the wake of the September 11th attacks, many people across the country wanted to do something to help and support first responders.

For one Tarboro woman-- that service came in the way of pies.

Natalie Miller was a former protective service officer for the Capital Police in Washington, D.C.

Since 9/11 she has been delivering pies as a way to honor and thank those who risked and continue to risk their lives for the safety of others.

In 2014, She was hospitalized - receiving chemotherapy at UNC-Chapel Hill, for ovarian cancer. Her friends came together to make sure the pies were delivered.

Many of the first responders look forward to the treat and it’s a reminder of such an impactful moment in history

Natalie Miller“I watched it unfold and I remember sitting there with a 1 and a 1/2-year-old thinking 'Oh my gosh this is our country.' I just hope we all always appreciate the work that law enforcement and firefighters do," said Miller. "I just think they go in when we run out and that takes a lot of courage, a lot of self-sacrifice and I like to remind them that we do appreciate them.”

Miller said her children who are in college have also taken on the family tradition and she encourages everyone to join.
