The heat makes a comeback Friday ahead of a front that brings a scattered storm chance.

This front previously looked like it would begin to move in on Saturday, but all global and high resolution models have sped up the arrival of the front to Friday.

This could mean another chance for storms during high school football games.

The front may be far enough south of the area Saturday, to where our storm chance would mainly be toward the Sandhills and the Coastal Plain. For now, chances are low for Duke's home game vs. Stanford.

NC drought status shows little change

The latest drought report released on September 10th showed some improvement in southern counties. Recent rains allowed for some areas to escape the drought label and move to "abnormally dry". For our northern counties, it's a different story. Severe to extreme drought persists in northern counties with this latest update.

"Things are looking a little better in our southern counties," Aimee Wilmoth added. "They have had some good rain in the last week, but our northern counties really could use a good soaking," Wilmoth says.

        What's active in the tropics?

We are watching just one area for possible tropical development over the next seven days. It has a low chance of formation.

This area of low pressure likely gets shoved toward the East Coast. While that could send some moisture our way later in the weekend into early next week, the main culprit for any rain we see next week will be a cold front from the west.

El Niño to Super El Niño

Conditions for a Super El Niño have not been reached, yet but we could experience those conditions by the end of the year. For this to occur sea temperatures must be at least two degrees Celsius above normal for an average of three months. Currently we are at 1.5 just above that number and climbing.
