Saturn at opposition: 2025's best views of the ringed planet

The ringed giant Saturn reaches opposition providing the best views of the planet all year.

Opposition occurs as Earth passes between an outer planet, like the ringed gas giant Saturn.  This places it opposite the Sun in our sky. This is also when the planet is closest, and therefor brightest, of the year.

Even without a telescope, you’ll see Saturn clearly with the naked eye. Look to the east around sunset.  Saturn will be visible all night, setting in the west around sunset.

Binoculars or a small telescope will reveal Saturn's rings which have reappeared since March they appeared "edge-on" from Earth  Though the rings are more than four Earth's wide, they average about 30 feet thick.

Saturn will continue to be big and bright throughout the remainder of September. Best views will be this week while the new moon won't be interfering.
