Several large wildfires are ongoing in Minnesota, Manitoba and Ontario. As smoke billows from these fires, it gets carried by upper-level winds.

You can see the smoke on satellite imagery from Wednesday morning. It's thick near the Virginia-North Carolina border.
This is making the air quality really poor near the Great Lakes and parts of the Northeast/New England.
Here at home, smoke will be in the mid to upper levels of the atmosphere. It will be thicker northeast of the Triangle and thinner southwest.
Air quality is forecast to be "moderate" through Thursday, but it may get unhealthy for sensitive groups later in the week.
